Recap: Physics simulations for logos

Last night we had a good meeting, with Andrew Buttery presenting a professional logo animation that used rigid body dynamics. Alex Fraser presented a way to fill a mould with liquid metal using SPH particles and the new Cube Surfer addon. The demo file is available here. Simply open the file, install and enable the Cube Surfer addon, and play the animation.

Video of the entire meeting is up on YouTube. Sorry about the poor sound quality – we’ll try to fix that for next time.

Melbourne Blender Society – March 26th – Brendon Murphy on converting materials to Cycles

The Melbourne Blender society will be meeting at VPAC Systems Office on Thursday the 26th of March from 6:00 to 8:00pm.

For the first time we are going to try to broadcast this event via Google Hangouts on Air and if successful, will post a link after the event.

After the great Pausefest meeting last time around we’ll be following up with another guest  speaker – Brendon Murphy. Brendon has been involved in the Blender community in Melbourne for many years and is involved in co-ordinating python add-ons for Blender. He will be giving a talk about how to covert materials from Blender Internal to Cycles quickly using easy to run scripts.

Andrew Buttery will do a “making of” talk on the logo he did for the new Campaign Coins kickstarter campaign which will take you through the evolution of the design and some of the challenges faced.

Blender 2.74. is in the “release candidate” phase at the moment (i.e. it’s only a few days away from final release) and we will demo some of the new features.

We’ll give an update on the Project Charcoal including how close we are to making the first shot “final” and what we have learnt so far…

Finally, we’ll have open Q&A – aka instant tutorial, where you can ask questions and one of the experts will answer.

There will be 12 computers available for use in the workshop. Last time there were enough computers for everyone, but you can bring a laptop if you like. Or, you can just watch.

So see you Thursday 26th at: VPAC – Building 91 (view map) 110 Victoria Street, Carlton South.

In case you missed it: here is the link to Campbell Barton’s talk from the last meeting: https://melbourneblender.wordpress.com/2015/02/14/pause-fest-retrospective-videos-and-photos/

Pause Fest Retrospective: Videos and Photos

We had a great meeting in February, with 30 or so people coming along to talk about Blender at Pause Fest. Some of them were just staying back from an earlier meetup, but hey, we’ll take them. It was good to see lots of new faces users there too, with at least one school kid who had come along with his dad – and who knew what he was talking about when it came to Blender.

Melbourne Blender Society – Feb 9th – Pausefest meetup with special guest Andrew Price (BlenderGuru) in person!

The Melbourne Blender society will be meeting at Pausefest on Monday the 9th of February from 7:00 to 8:00pm at the Beer De Luxe @ Fed Square. See the Pausefest Blender Meetup page for more information.

Please note that entry to the Meetup is FREE. You do not have to buy a Pausefest ticket!

The first meeting for this year we will have Andrew Price from Blender Guru in person.

Andrew Price has been providing online tutorials for Blender for over five years and has published two of the most comprehensive training courses ever made for blender – the Nature AcademyArchitecture Academy and most recently The Grass Essentials. Andrew also records a monthly podcast where he interviews other artists using Blender, provides advice and generally philosophizes on life…

As a result Andrew is one of the most influential figures in the broader Blender Community and will be answering any questions you have on making photo-realistic renders using Cycles.

Besides that we will have a retrospective of the best Blender Artwork of 2014 and, if we have time, the usual mini-tutorial.

Hope to see you there for what will be a great night!

Melbourne Blender Society – November 2014 – meetup

The Melbourne Blender society will be meeting at VPAC Systems Office on Thursday the 27th of November from 6:00 to 8:00pm.

Firstly, we are working on something big early next year and will hopefully be announcing it on the night.

In an action packed last meeting for the year our special guest this month is Paul Caggegi who will do an introduction to the Video Sequence Editor (VSE). Paul is a professional video editor and motion graphics designer. He also is the creator of the Pandeia comic book in which he uses Blender to create background elements. See his talk about how he incorporates Blender in to his creative process from last year’s Blender Conference.

Andrew Buttery will demonstrate SyncSketch which is used by Theory Animation (of Ray & Clovis fame) for doing their animation critiques remotely.

If we have time, Andrew will also show how model objects such a fence and tiled roof using particle systems which we are using for Project Charcoal.

We’ll give an update on the Project Charcoal including how close we are to making the first shot “final” and what we have learnt so far…

Finally, we’ll have open Q&A – aka instant tutorial, where you can ask questions and one of the experts will answer. Last time Alex Fraser built a mini-game using the logic editor and python in 30 minutes!

There will be 12 computers available for use in the workshop. Last time there were enough computers for everyone, but you can bring a laptop if you like. Or, you can just watch.

So see you Thursday 27th at: VPAC – Building 91 (view map) 110 Victoria Street, Carlton South.

The Melbourne Blender society will be meeting at VPAC Systems Office on Thursday the 25th of September from 6:00 to 8:00pm.

Melbourne Blender Society participated in the World Blender Day in August. This was a 24 hour set of presentations from Blender Groups from around the world. We’ll give a  rundown of what happened, how it went and what we would do differently next year.

Alex Fraser will give a breakdown on a new logo he created.

We will have a working session on Python – specifically getting Patrick Fuller’s molecule drawing program to work (see http://patrick-fuller.com/molecules-from-smiles-molfiles-in-blender/).

We’ll give a update on our short film, code named Project Charcoal.

Finally, we will have a Q&A session where the experienced members try to answer any questions or solve any problems you have encountered. Come on, try to find a question they can’t answer!

There will be 12 computers available for use in the workshop. Last time there were enough computers for everyone, but you can bring a laptop if you like. Or, you can just watch. Dinner arrangements will be decided on the day.

So see you Thursday 25th at: VPAC – Building 91 (view map) 110 Victoria Street, Carlton South.

Unfortunately Paul Caggegi is unable to make the meeting tonight. So Andrew Buttery will do the Intro to Video Sequence Editor. Paul has promised to speak at our next meeting about Pandeia and how he uses Blender in his creative process.

The animation for Andrew’s fluid simulation talk was completed and launched yesterday. Check out the Fate Tokens Kickstarter!

See you tonight at VPAC!
